I came real close to buying one of these, but then decided that The
Little Magic Box (formerly Y/C++) was a better deal, since it was a
seperate unit that could actually be used as standalone or connected
directly to the Toaster's inputs/outputs...it also supports component
output for BetaSP or M-II decks...and it's also a little cheaper.

I ended up getting neither of them because all I really needed was to
transcode the Toaster's composite output to S-VHS and found a used TBC+
that does the job quite nicely.

An old issue of VTU (late '93 or early '94?) had a very good comparison
of both units and they were both about the same quality-wise...The Little
Magic Box was definitely a better deal though.

To answer your question though, yes, the Y/Cplus only transcodes Y/C
signals to high-quality composite...it just bypasses the Toaster's inputs
by plugging directly into the Toaster's input bus with a ribbon cable.

Even though I don't have one, I would recommend The Little Magic Box over
the Y/Cplus....but that's just based on research I've done and not
personal experience.  =)
